Trail description 

A scenic and culturally rich stage of the E3 / GR 65.3 from Somport to Jaca (30.1 km, approx. 9h). The route begins at the Somport Pass, where pilgrims can see the ruins of the 11th-century Hospital of Santa Cristina, once one of the three most important hospitals of medieval Christendom and a crucial stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, visited also by King Sancho Ramírez.

The trail crosses historic bridges, passes through Canfranc with its modernist train station and medieval streets, and Villanúa, home to Romanesque churches, a 12th-century bridge, and a fortified 15th-century house. The stage continues past Aruej and Castiello de Jaca before reaching Jaca, a town rich in history and home to one of Spain’s finest Romanesque cathedrals. Ideal for hikers seeking a combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Trail type

The route offers a variety of surfaces, including forest paths, dirt tracks, and occasional rocky sections, so hikers can expect some changes in texture along the way. The initial descent from Somport is noticeable, though the slopes become more moderate as the trail continues. 

Signage is clear, with the familiar white-and-red GR markers and Camino symbols making it easy to follow. Rest areas are available in the villages and small towns along the route, convenient for a short break or refreshments. The trails are generally well maintained, with only minor natural obstacles, making the walk suitable for hikers in good condition without being overly challenging.

This stage is particularly suited to hikers who enjoy a blend of natural scenery, mountain landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.
