Trail description

The E1 Trail between Bagnara (Nocera Umbra) and Monte Alago is a scenic Umbrian section of the European route connecting North Cape to Sicily. About 6 km long, the trail offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and valleys.

The trailhead begins at the small historic hamlet of Bagnara, nestled at the foot of Monte Pennino. The village is immersed in a natural setting near the springs of the Topino River, which flows from Monte Pennino and carries its waters all the way to Perugia. These waters were celebrated by Dante in Paradiso (Canto XI), praising the life of Saint Francis.  Bagnara itself preserves a centuries‑old heritage, including the Church of Sant’Egidio (originating from the 13th century with elements from later periods), and reflects a rural Umbrian culture tied to water sources and medieval pilgrimage paths. The wider area around Nocera Umbra features intriguing historic sites such as the Campanaccio civic tower, remnants of medieval fortifications, and old churches in the nearby historic centre of Nocera Umbra.

Along the route, hikers can enjoy natural springs for refilling water and local specialties, making it ideal for a half-day excursion.

Reaching the highlands and open meadows of Monte Alago offers a contrasting landscape. The name “Alago” historically refers to a lake that has now disappeared, whose ancient presence influenced the soil and vegetation. Today, the plateau is a “sea of green”, with open spaces, sparse woods, and panoramic views of the Umbrian hills, attractive to hikers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers.

Trail type

The trail winds mainly along well-defined, carefully traced paths, punctuated by short stretches of dirt roads that pass through forests and meadows, offering a pleasant and easy walk without technical difficulties.

The ascent from Bagnara to Monte Alago is gentle and gradual, making the route suitable even for beginners or those seeking a relaxing hike immersed in nature. Recently updated signage guides hikers clearly along the entire trail, highlighting its inclusion in the prestigious European long-distance trail.

At the start of the trail, in the small square, there is also a fountain where visitors can fill water bottles before setting off.

Along the way, there are other spots to rest: the Conca di Monte Alago provides a welcoming area with stunning views, while small natural springs scattered throughout the trail allow for refreshing pauses and full enjoyment of the outdoor experience.
